What is your story of how you became an educational developer / pedagogical counsellor / educational technologist / instructional designer?

Ten years ago now, Green and Little (2015) undertook an international survey of educational developers (n=1039). The survey reported great variety in the disciplines of respondents’ highest degrees, with a total of 89 different disciplines reflected, “from ‘adult and professional education’ to ‘zoology.'” (p. 146).

We will begin this meeting with an opportunity for a few colleagues to share their stories of becoming educational developers with the full group (~5 minutes each), followed by a combined Q&A period. Then, we will meet in breakout rooms to connect with one another and learn more about our respective paths to becoming educational professionals.

For instance:

  • How do you frame your journey into educational development?
  • What have been the defining moments?
  • The unexpected interludes or tangents?
  • The opportunities for transferring ways of knowing, doing and being within or across experiences, disciplines, professions, or workplaces?
  • How is your experience of becoming an educational developer similar to and different from the experiences colleagues have shared?

Some paths are more direct than others. It is up to you what you wish to share, and how you wish to tell your own story of becoming an educational developer.

The objective of this session is to encourage individual reflection and promote connection among colleagues across institutions. It is also a time to consider how we can increase awareness of our profession, given the many paths that can lead to it.
