How Learning Works is divided into seven chapters, each dealing with a different pedagogical question, such as: “How Does Students’ Prior Knowledge Affect Their Learning,” “What Factors Motivate Students?’, “How Do Students Become Self-Directed Learners?” Over the past couple of semester, the Active Learning Fellows have been having stimulating discussions based on this book. We felt it would be inspiring to open up this discussion to the wider community. The book is easy to read, and contains substantial ideas that can spark meaningful discussion. The end of each chapter contains practical strategies that can be used right away in the classroom. These strategies are simple, but it’s not always immediately obvious how they can best be employed. This book club can help members gain a greater perspective on ideas that we all come across very often in our teaching.
If you’d like to attend (or for any questions), please RSVP to Jeff Gandell at firstname.lastname@example.org.
