The purpose of this project is to conceive an evaluation tool for active learning that will enable the implementation of the design-oriented learning strategies. This evaluation tool will be an interactive program that allows for open-ended engineering questions in the context of the targeted course to be easily evaluated. This is required to easily correct and rapidly provide feedback for open-ended design questions.

The SALTISE Mini-Grant is an endeavour of mine as it will enable me to improve the methods I employ when teaching design solving skills in my class entitled MECH 393 Machine Element Design in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Prior to becoming an assistant professor, I worked in industry for 5 years. Specifically, I worked in my own start up where I conceived novel medical devices, from napkin sketches to market viability. These designs sought to solve unmet clinical needs and are now sold in over 15 countries. Hence, I have experience in the commercial design process and have successfully conveyed this to several employees and to both junior and senior engineers.

My experience thus far, in teaching and speaking at large with undergraduate students, is that certain weaknesses exists when it comes to dealing with open-ended engineering design situations. This notion is substantiated by shortcomings I have observed when seeking certain skills in students that I valued while working in industry.
