Dear Member,

At this time, we would like to wish you a wonderful Victoria Day and enjoy the long weekend.

Our conference program is now available and can be viewed online.  The conference is shaping up to be one of our most diverse and interesting conferences yet!  Click here for more information: http://www.saltise.ca/conference-2015/.

We have had an overwhelming start to our registration with record numbers that have far exceeded our original limit of 100 free spots. With this, the Conference Committee has generously taken the decision to extend the number of free registrants to one hundred and seventy five (175). Even with this new limit there are only a few spots left.  Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy the 2015 Conference courtesy of the Entente Canada Quebec special grant.

After May 20th registration cost will be 30$ online, $50 onsite. Note that students with valid ID cards will continue to be FREE.

We look forward to seeing you at the conference on June 2nd!

Best wishes,
The SALTISE team

LIFETIME OF CONTRIBUTION AWARD
The SALTISE Pedagogical Innovation and Lifetime of Contribution Award recognizes one special individual each year who has provided exceptional support to promote educational innovation.  Such an individual contributes to the growth of the learning and instruction community by providing  guidance and mentorship to both students and colleagues alike.  At the same time such an individual sees the value of building beyond their institutions and fostering the growth of larger communities of scholarly practice.

SALTISE is proud to announce that this year’s recipient is

Dr. Jim Slotta

Dr. Slotta is an Associate Professor with the Department for Curriculum, Teaching and Learning and the Centre for Science, Mathematics and Technology Education at OISE.
His research employs technology-enhanced learning environments to investigate cognitive models of learning and instruction. Dr. Slotta has recently developed the “Knowledge Community and Inquiry” (KCI) pedagogical model, where students work together to create knowledge resources, which then serve as materials and inspiration to subsequent inquiry projects.

Being given this award, here are a couple of quotes from his students who have sent in letters of support for his nomination.  We will be featuring more of these at the Award’s Ceremony on June 2nd,

“Participating in Professor Slotta’s lab group has enriched my graduate experience in immeasurable ways. He recognizes the value in mentoring students as a group and on an individual basis and taking an inclusive approach towards his students in his own research.” Michelle Lui

“Jim’s mentorship has sparked and nurtured my very identity as a researcher, and given me wondrously rich learning opportunities in which to test my ideas.” Cresencia Fong

Dr. Jim Slotta has been on SALTISE’s Advisory Board since its inception and played a vital role in its early development.  He has been a keynote speaker at our 2013 conference and workshop presenter both at our 2013 and 2014 conferences.  We are greatly indebted to you, Jim!
