SALTISE (Supporting Active Learning and Technological Innovations in the Studies of Education) is once again offering the popular Mini-Grant program for Winter 2019.
Up to six (6) mini-grants to candidates from the post-secondary sectors in Quebec will be awarded. Eligible individuals include faculty, instructional designers and professionals; and, post-doctoral and graduate students working with eligible faculty. The aim of the SALTISE Mini-Grant program is to support efforts to develop materials and tools that enrich the students learning experiences and promote the use of active learning instruction at the post-secondary level.
Grants will be awarded to projects that build or sustain ongoing groups (or individuals looking to build a group) producing activities and technological innovations that promote active learning. The outcome of the ideal project will see students improve their learning through participation in a learning activity or through the use of a learning tool.
Mini-Grants will be funded to a maximum of $2,000 each. Candidates must begin their projects in the Winter 2019. All projects must be completed no later than Fall 2019. Proposals will be reviewed by a sub-committee of the SALTISE Advisory Committee. Awarding of proposals will be announced mid-February.
Deliverables Expected:
- A “product” that enhances the design, implementation and/or assessment of Active Learning instruction. Projects could include, but not limited to, the development of the following:

- materials for active learning activity (and protocols for best use);
- prototype (and documentation) of innovative technology;
- tools to support the use of instructional software applications or simulations;
- tools for effectively assessing learning from active learning instruction.
All products created must be made available freely to the larger community via the SALTISE website.
- Bi-monthly written progress reports (300 words max – specific template provided) – may be published on the SALTISE website.
- Presentation at the 2019 SALTISE Conference (3-4 June 2019). Awardees must present their results (or progress report) at the Annual Conference.
- Projects will be eligible for the SALTISE Innovation Award, presented at the Conference.
- Workshop and/or presentation at home institution. All awardees must design a workshop and/or presentation to disseminate their findings at their home institution. This presentation should be coordinated with their institution’s professional development office.

Proposals should include the following:
- Name and institutional affiliation.
- Projects involving groups with interdisciplinary or inter-institutional affiliation will be viewed favourably.
- Please include confirmation that you have informed your Academic Dean or Research Coordinator (college-level); Faculty Development Offices – Service de soutien à l’enseignement (university-level).
- Project description (300 – 500 words), clear and concise description of the project (activity and/or technology used) including the following:

- the objective(s) of the project,
- target audience,
- scope and impact,
- project’s contribution to the SALTISE community.
- Background search, brief statement confirming you have made reasonable effort to determine whether similar products have already been developed locally (e.g., other mini-grants have been granted on this topic). If yes, provide a statement how your current project plans to improve/adapt/repurpose the original product(s).
- Required resources, brief description of materials/resources needed to carry out the project. Clear details of how the budget will be spent. (N.B., disbursement of the funds to be stipulated in the contract once awarded).
- Knowledge and skills you (and your team) bring to this project, thereby, ensuring the completion of the project.
- Assessment of project, a brief description of the method(s) you will use to evaluate the success of the project.
Ineligible Expenses:
- Payments to yourself, as “salary”, are ineligible. If you are hiring relatives, please note this may be problematic for the “conflict of interests” clause that is common at most institutions. In such cases, please advise us in advance so that we can discuss the implications and possible alternatives.
