Overview
The goal of this activity is to help students integrate knowledge seen in theory classes.
The benefit for students is that they are exposed to multiple short case studies on ethics as well as the vocabulary r/t ethics. It is a ludic way of learning.
By solving riddles, following clues, completing puzzles and discussing case studies students are encouraged to engage with the material and one another. Students are divided into teams and sent off on one of two circuits through five stations. An instructor at each station checks the students’ work before providing the clue to the next station. The first team to complete all stations wins.
The strategy used in this activity is Game-based Instruction. The activity takes place in the college (students walk around the college to find stations) and takes 90 minutes to complete. It should take place after students receive some theory on values and ethics in a theory class (2.5 hours in Champlain).
Instructional Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Differentiate concepts related to ethics in nursing
- Apply a method of ethical analysis to a clinical situation
- Use reference documents (OIIQ Code of Ethics, Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms) to guide discussions
