Part 2: 3:00 – 4:00, Session: Interactive Think Tank

• Building Impactful & Sustainable Faculty Development Models
  Lead: Carol Hawthorne, CTL, Concordia University

This session will engage participants in a discussion about their current strategy for faculty development (goals, design features, communication strategy, & impact assessment). Ed Dev SIGs will learn from each other by sharing ideas and considering new approaches to inform faculty development practices.

*During the Mind Meld session, participants will be invited to join one of the three discussion tables, each focussed on a different topic. The session is facilitated by a member of the Ed Dev SIG community who acts as lead discussant at the table. The session might take the form of a brief presentation of a project they have worked on and would like to share, or an idea they are considering and would like feedback on from the community, etc. The goal of the Mind Meld session is to provide a forum for exploration, exchange, and brainstorming for specific projects brought forth by members of the Ed Dev SIG community. The Mind Meld will last 45 minutes and then each Table Leader will share a 5 minute synopsis of their discussion to the whole group.

Theme:  Students as Partners

The speakers will discuss their model for course revision that involved students, faculty, and staff as co-designers in the development of active learning strategies for large STEM courses. This McGill project was funded by a grant offered by the AAU-STEM Education Network to re-design large freshman classes.

Information about the presenters:

Cherie Woolmer will present on the specifics of involving students in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) projects. Cherie is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Editorial Manager for The International Journal for Students as Partners (IJSaP). IJSaP is a new journal about learning and teaching together in higher education. IJSaP explores new perspectives, practices, and policies regarding how students and staff are working in partnership to enhance learning and teaching in higher education. Shared responsibility for teaching and learning is the underlying premise of students as partners, and IJSaP is produced using a student-staff partnership approach. Cherie is based in the MacPherson Institute for Leadership, Innovation, and Excellence in Teaching, at McMaster University.

Laura Pavelka, instructor from the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and graduate students Amy McKean, Jacqueline Kort Mascort, David Urman, and Michael Wood have been actively involved in Student as Partners’ Initiatives and will be sharing their experiences with participants.
