The fall temperatures have finally set in, which can only mean that we’re closer to the end of the semester than most of us wish to admit. If your year has been anything like ours, there are too few hours in the day and too few days in the week to complete all of the lofty goals we’ve set for ourselves. Dynamic Foursome Documents Their Achievement

Using a SALTISE mini-grant as their starting point four of our colleagues from three local colleges have taken their projects to new heights by combining their efforts. Caroline Cormier and Véronique Turcotte from Cégep André-Laurendeau, Edward Awad from Vanier College, and Yann Brouillette from Dawson College were awarded mini-grants in 2016-17 for their respective projects that developed video-based instructional units that supported a flipped classroom approach. Their story is a perfect example of the types of collaborations that we hope to foster among our SALTISE community members.

Science and Engineering Teaching 

Concordia University’s Professor Calvin S. Kalman, has gained bragging rights with the second edition of his book, Successful Science and Engineering Teaching: Theoretical and Learning Perspectives. This edition focuses on answering the question of why a particular technique or class of techniques is effective. In particular, it includes research comparing Peer Instruction with the Conceptual Conflict Collaborative Group Activity that had been described in the first edition. In addition, you can learn more about how to use Reflective Writing strategy, along with finding a rubric that helps with its use. Consider picking up a copy!





Science and Art Comes Together in EducART

Representing Vanier College, Jailson Lima created the video Art, Science & Perception for the EducART Project (, sponsored by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the city of Montreal, and the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications du Québec. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the CEGEP system in Quebec, each college was invited to choose an artwork from the museum’s collection and propose a learning activity inspired by it. Congratulations Jailson and colleagues!

In addition, Jailson was among the sixty CEGEP teachers who received awards for their dedication to innovative teaching at the 2017 AQPC Symposium. Jailson received his award from Mme Hélène David, Minister of Higher Education, and Richard Moisan, President of the AQPC.





Bringing History to Life

Jocelyn Parr of the History department at Dawson College is among the creative and talented instructors using active learning techniques and finding innovative ways to use Active Learning classrooms. As part of the Dawson Active Learning Community (DALC) fellows program, she has transformed her history courses into dynamic and lively spaces where students engage in simulations that allow them to make history come alive. In addition, Jocelyn has been named as a finalist for a prestigious Governor General Literary Award for her book “Uncertain Weights and Measures“. Her novel is one of 70 works selected from writers, poets, illustrators and translators from seven categories. The winners will be revealed on November 1. Wishing her much success!





Beta-testing New Tools to Orchestrate Active Learning

To better manage active learning group work, a team of college-teachers, headed by Nathaniel Lasry from John Abbott College, has developed an app called GoGRASP (Group Response and Ambient Student Participation System).

Imagine trying to attend to six or ten groups of students at one time. A near impossible task, right! But that is what most teachers who try out active learning pedagogies are asked to do on a regular basis. GoGRASP is an app intended to support the implementation of active learning by keeping track of each group’s progress and providing instructors with a way to prioritize who she/he should attend to next. Read more about it in an article written for la Vitrine Technologie Éducation by Gabriel Flacks.

Asynchronous Peer Instruction Platform, myDALITE

myDALITE platform brings research and practice together to support the flipped classroom approach! If you believe your students might benefit from additional time for reflection and reasoning about the important concepts within your curriculum, myDALITE might be for you. At its core, this platform emulates a Peer Instruction strategy to get students writing explanations for their reasoning (aka rationales) and reading those of others, all the while considering their understanding of the concepts in question.
