Overview

In this activity, students are asked to write a text and then manipulate it to fit two different grammar tenses in order to show that they have gained a certain amount of control over the theoretical material learned in class.

In this activity, students are asked to write a text and then manipulate it to fit two different grammar tenses in order to show that they have gained a certain amount of control over the theoretical material learned in class.

In class, the teacher gives the students a series of prompts (the beginning of the first sentence of a text) and asks the students to continue the sentence and write a 250 word text. After the first and the second stage of writing, students are given feedback and corrections which they can incorporate and have access to in the next writing stage. In the first stage they have access to Antidote and online resources to correct their work, in the second text they only have access to their first text and the auto-correction guide given by the teacher.

Finally, using the first two texts, the students write their third in a different grammatical tense using all of their accumulated work to have reference to as they write.

Instructional Objectives

  • To help students improve their writing by giving them the opportunity to focus entirely on the grammatical level after doing all the story creation in the first text.
  • To have the students apply the grammatical theory learned in class on accordances between verbs and their subject by having them manipulate the same text into several different tenses.
  • To get students to learn to autocorrect by pointing out the things that they do write and giving them tools (online and written) to identify and fix their mistakes. This makes them more autonomous in their writing.
  • To help students master a greater level of control over grammatical tense when they write.

Benefits

  • This activity involves the students being able to transfer between grammatical tenses showing that they have a lot of control over their writing
  • Students manipulate their text and are able to transfer the core of the text focusing on changing the language without worrying about the content
  • It gets students to diversify their writing by asking them to include and identify 20 different verbs, 10 different adjectives, and 10 adverbs.

Challenges

  • Corrections of the text are very time consuming
  • Students do not always go in the right direction with their writing and correction and this needs to be identified at an early stage by the teacher
  • So that the students do not anticipate the grammar change it is important to be changing the subject each time you do the activity
  • Not all students act autonomously and correct and work on their text at home which is necessary to improve during the next writing session.

Tips

  • Be very explicit with what the students are supposed to be doing at each stage
  • By correcting the first text with a green pen instead of the read pen encourages them to realize that if they put in the work they are able to produce a higher level of text, building up a confidence that is often lacking in this level of french class. This helps students build a better relationship with the language
  • It is important to plan in advance and to be organized to implement future steps as this is an activity that takes place over several weeks
